Juan and Carmen’s life began with a fairytale wedding in Mexico. After five decades of marriage Juan died first, followed by Carmen. In this remembrance portrait, their son Alberto honors his parents’ memory by having me collage together black and white and also full color photographs from the past.
“>Although a far cry from the Catholic cathedral where they took their vows, I use the fuschia pews of Finland’s Church in the Rock to pull four time periods together. Curiously, Alberto pointed out to me that unconsciously I had arranged these four periods of his parents’ life in the way Catholics make the sign of the cross.
Alberto writes: “The sequence right now is Got married, Had kids, Received gifts and Retired. That’s South, North, West and then East.”
